Word Over All:  Whitman in Song

Florilegium will open our 44th season with a bicentennial tribute to the poetry of Walt Whitman. The program explores Whitman’s words through settings by Randall Thompson, Norman Dello Joio, René Clausen, and others. Central to the program is Jeffrey Van's four-movement song cycle for choir and guitar, A Procession Winding Around Me, a poignant setting of four of Whitman's Civil War poems with a wide emotional range, from anguish and anger to catharsis and hope.

Randall Thompson - The Last Invocation

René Clausen - Three Whitman Settings

Jeffrey Van - A Procession Winding Around Me

Daniel Elder - Shadows Will Fall

David Conte - Two songs from A Whitman Triptych

Bob Chilcott - The Modern Man I Sing

Norman Dello Joio - A Jubilant Song
